In September 2019, Lagos State, which is the economic hub of Nigeria played host to the maiden edition of the Big 5 Construct show. The Big 5 Construct is a global event held annually in Dubai and continue to expand into new cities across East Africa, North Africa, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. For more than three decades, the Big 5 has evolved into the largest, most influential and renowned portfolio of construction industry events.
The Big 5 Construct Nigeria is now recognized as the largest building and construction event in Nigeria, with over 130 exhibitors from 21 countries. The 2019 launch edition was reported to have surpassed all expectations – receiving the support from key stake holders of the Nigerian Construction Industry. Alongside the international and domestic exhibitors, the event offered free-to-attend CPD (certified training) workshops and seminars to update attendees on the latest industry innovations, best practices and practical ideas.
I facilitated at one of the workshops and spoke extensively on the subject of affordable housing and the role of architecture in Nigeria. Modular construction using off-site pre-fabrication building materials, design of smaller housing units, and creative designing such as co-living and co-working were my top three design innovations that can be implemented to achieve affordable housing in Nigeria.
